The Red Mountain Boys consists of Alan Thomas Begley, guitar player, Jeff Daugherty, mandolin player, Lewis Mock, banjo player, and Jon Murphy, bass player. The band formed thanks to the members all having the time to perform in a band, moving to similar places, and realizing they had great chemistry together as a group. When the pandemic hit, they continued playing together safely outside, and they started writing material together. They have since released various singles together, and have essentially only performed their original material.
Begley grew up listening to bluegrass music in Virginia and was taught by John McCutcheon in Pine Mountain, Kentucky. Daugherty’s uncle hosted jam sessions with his band frequently, and Daugherty himself remembers being exposed to various forms of bluegrass music. Mock began performing at the age of eight at the Front Street Replica in Dodge City, Kansas, where he performed hundreds of shows. Finally, Murphy has been playing bass and singing since high school and studied for a BA in Media Arts with a Music minor from the University of Arizona and an MA in Applied Linguistics from University of Massachusetts Boston.
In 2021, when the guys recorded their singles in the studio, they would often do so individually, wearing masks to abide by pandemic guidelines. Daugherty, owning the music studio they recorded in, was elated to be able to get some of his own music recorded. The songs are currently only on streaming services, as the band wants to do their part to be eco-friendly.
Daugherty loves the connection of the band through the audience when they are playing live, when the audience is invested in the songs that the band performs and ends up singing along with the choruses by the end of the show. He hopes that people can recognize that you don’t necessarily have to be a bluegrass fan to like the group, and that even fans of music such as metal can enjoy what the group has to offer.
