Music of the Mountains: Parkin Lot

Posted

Funnily enough, the band Parkin Lot was actually established in a parking lot – the parking lot of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, to be exact. It was founded in 2007 by Mike “Banker” Bank and Al Hagar, who had already known each other for years at that point. Banker had been looking for a vehicle to start presenting his music, as he is a very prolific songwriter, writing anywhere from one to two songs a week. Through its founding, Parkin Lot became that vehicle.

Banker describes the band as an acoustically based band that can go psychedelic and electronic in its presentation as well. He cites Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead as among their influences, as “Banker” in particular likes writing songs with a story and songs about people. If he were to describe the styles of music that the band plays, he would describe it as Americana folk-rock.

Banker estimates he has written about 400-500 songs throughout the course of his life. He wrote his first song in 1985 with a guitar on a bench in Alaska and has loved the craft of songwriting ever since. He says that the Boulder musicians are incredibly close as people no matter how big or small they are, and he loves being able to be part of such a big community of musicians.

Banker says he loves being able to tell stories on stage. He hopes that audiences will take away powerful stories of humanity from their shows and that they can come to the shows and disappear from reality for a bit. He says if you feel a little bit freer by the time you walk out of the show, he’s done his job.

You can see Parkin Lot perform at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Friday, December 9, 2022, at 7 p.m.
