Jon Ridnell has been playing music with his son, Miles, for almost a decade. Miles has played bass since he was a kid, and Jon has been playing music professionally for over 35 years. Once Miles was ready to play professionally, it was natural that the two would come together to form their own band.
Jon built off of his stage name Blackdog (which is also his personal nickname) and titled this new duo the New Family Dog Duo. In live gigs, the band has also been joined by Melly Francis, formerly of the band The Sweet Lillies. Jon has had his name attached to multiple independent releases over the years. Under his real name, he’s released Country Dog and Reliance, and under New Family Dog String Band, he’s released an acoustic-bluegrass album that shares the band’s name. Some of these album covers feature his beloved dog Saber, who has often been seen spending time at Brightwood Music.
Now Jon and Miles, under the New Family Dog Duo name, are set to release a new album, titled Halo, through Dutch Records. The album marks their first release through a record label. Jon will be featured on acoustic and electric guitar, Miles will be featured on acoustic bass, and both will contribute vocals. They will be joined by Sally Van Meter on dobro guitar and vocals, Micheal Wooten on drums, Jordan Ramsey on mandolin, and Eric Moon on a guest accordion track.
As a musician, Ridnell hasn’t confined himself to one particular genre. Growing up, he idolized jazz musicians like Miles Davis, acoustic musicians like Tony Rice, and rock musicians like Jimi Hendrix and Little Feat. These influences have shaped the variety of his releases. Over the course of his career, he’s played and written various bluegrass, folk, and electro-funk music.
Ridnell is thrilled to have his first record deal after hiring a publicist during quarantine, and he hopes that the deal will lead to potential film and TV licensing for his music. The upcoming album promises to be a folk-country release, and the first two singles, 6 Feet Under and Don’t Give up on Me, are available wherever you listen to music.
You can catch the New Family Dog Duo at The Train Cars every Sunday through at least August 22 from 12-4 p.m. You can also check out their website at www.newfamilydog.com or Jon Ridnell’s website at www.jonridnell.com.
Live music is back! That’s right. And in support of all of our local musician friends and venues, here are our weekly music listings.
