James Moors and Kort McCumber first met each other in Lyons, Colorado, at the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest in 2005. Both of them were touring solo at the time, but as their friendship developed, so did their camaraderie as a duo. When McCumber didn’t have any gigs, he would play mandolin and sing harmony with Moors, and the duo grew organically from there.
Their first self-titled album came out in 2009, and the record gave them an excuse to move on from their solo careers and stick together as a duo. McCumbers would describe their music “under the umbrella of Americana” along with singer-songwriter and folk music.
In 2011, John Smith, a mutual friend of the duo, helped book buses, hotels, and fans and friends of the two for a trip to Ireland. They would sight-see during the day and perform at night, and McCumbers cites this as the true beginning of the duo. They started with one Ireland trip a year, then extended into two, and finally extended into four trips a year, along with traveling to Scotland.
McCumbers loves being able to bring their music over to Ireland, citing influence in country and bluegrass melodies from Irish immigrants to the United States. He says that they often are able to latch onto the sounds and melodies that the two create and are invested in their harmony singing. They are always inspired by the country of Ireland, and they love being able to bring that inspiration back to Colorado shows.
For more information about the duo, visit their website at moorsandmccumber.com. You can see them performing at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at 5 p.m.
