Mark Kuban describes himself as being musically inclined from a very young age, having performed in Peter Pan when he was five and receiving his first guitar when he was only eleven. Kuban was inspired by street musicians growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, and blues, classical, and rock and roll music that he would hear at pubs or stadium events. He also found himself inspired by Johnny Johnson, keyboard player for Chuck Berry, who he played with when he was just eighteen. However, he cites his most significant influence as his father, Robert, who formed his own band, Bob Kuban and the In-Men, in the 60s and would achieve national notoriety for the band.
Kuban cites the foundation of his music as blues, despite attending college to study jazz. He describes his writing style as a “folk, soul writing style with a blues background.” He believes his goal when performing live now is connecting and sharing a smile with people in the audience, compared to his goals when playing with friends in school or becoming popular or just doing something you enjoyed with your friends.
Kuban hopes that audience members will have a good time at his shows, sharing the music they love and creating memories as well. He loves being able to share older music that may not have struck a certain chord with an audience at the time of its release but has a certain nostalgic value to it later on. He loves the Colorado music scene as a whole, as the connection that the artists have to each other reminds him of the music scene in St. Louis. There is a large musical community with which he can share his love of the art form he has dedicated his life to.
If you want to see Mark Kuban perform live, you can catch him at the Canyon Tavern (previously known as the Last Stand Tavern, now under new management) at 32138 Highway 72 in Coal Creek on Friday, December 23, 2022, at 6 p.m.
