Music of the Mountains: Magoo

Erik Hill, Dylan Flynn, and Paul Flynn are a relatively new trio in Colorado. When Dylan first moved to Denver about two years ago, he posted on Reddit asking if there were any pickers in the area ready to get out and play. One of the responders introduced the two Flynns (Dylan being Paul’s nephew) to Hill, and the group, with Hill on mandolin, Dylan Flynn on dobro, and Paul Flynn on bass, played together for about a year. Eventually, though, the group wanted Hill to be able to shine on his primary instrument, the guitar, so they formed a new group, which they called Magoo. Ten months in, they’re still loving the group.

Growing up, Hill’s parents played classic rock (Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, etc.), which inspired him to play the guitar. Eventually, though, he became exposed to jam bands such as Phish and The Grateful Dead, and when he came to Colorado, his first-ever bluegrass show was The Jeff Austin Band. As a Deadhead for many years, Paul discovered the Winterhawk Bluegrass Festival shortly after Jerry Garcia died, falling in love with bluegrass festivals and bringing instruments to festivals to learn how to play the genre. Dylan Flynn’s parents, along with Paul, would take Dylan to these bluegrass festivals, inspiring him to learn how to play along the way.

The band considers itself one that plays “bluegrass with lasers,” as there are elements of improvisation and effect pedals that give the music a psychedelic edge, but the band also likes to stick to the traditional roots of the genre. They love being able to play the music live because it’s easy to get the crowd jumping up and down and stomping their feet along to the music, and that energy carries them all the way through their shows.

Dylan Flynn recently heard someone at a festival say that if you’re not addicted to climbing, you’ll never truly be addicted to music because in both, you’re reaching a summit, and you’ll never reach the summit if you don’t have the motivation. They hope that someone who comes to the show who isn’t necessarily in tune (no pun intended) with their sound can still enjoy the music and recognize the quality that the band has to offer.
