Some people may see Lez Zeppelin as a “tribute band,” but guitarist Steph Paynes doesn’t think that description is appropriate for the group. To her, tribute bands try to emulate the original band as closely as possible, dressing up like the group and trying to convince the audience that they are like the original group. Instead, Lez Zeppelin’s goal is to take the music of the beloved band Led Zeppelin and interpret it in their own way. Paynes compares this process to the way a classical musician will reinterpret a concerto.
As a founder of the band, Paynes initially wanted to gather a group of women together to perform Led Zeppelin music for fun, but after realizing how difficult it was to play the music well, she realized they would have to put in a lot of work to make the music sound good. After six months of rehearsal, the band started performing in 2004. This kind of women-centered band was new for the time, and the band took off once they started performing.
Aside from Led Zeppelin, Payne cites many influences as helping to create the band’s sound. Lead vocalist Marlain Angelides went to the Royal Academy of Music and studied opera, and she was also in a very successful pop group in Greece. Bass guitarist Joan Chew is a music teacher and also plays violin, piano, and many other instruments.
Drummer Leesa Harrington-Squyres has played blues among many other styles of music in various different groups. Paynes studied jazz, participated in jazz bands and stage bands, and would also eventually embrace pop and heavy metal as other genres of choice.
Paynes says that the music of Led Zeppelin continues to be sifted through the group as musicians as they continue to play the music live, with alterations from the original tracks and improvisations that also differ from the original songs contributing to the overall sound of the group. Being able to connect with the band live is a special feeling that Paynes absolutely loves, and she loves the connection that the group is able to achieve with the audience whenever they can enchant them with the “intense immersion” of the reinterpreted music of Led Zeppelin.
If you want to see Lez Zeppelin perform live, you can catch them at the Caribou Room, 55 Indian Peaks Drive in Nederland, on Saturday, April 16, 2022. Doors open at 7 p.m. with dinner, and the show starts at 8 p.m.
