Jesse Maclaine describes herself as a singer-songwriter, pianist, composer, music teacher, and so much more. She says that her journey in music technically began when her mother would hold headphones to her pregnant belly to let Jesse hear classic music ranging from Elvis to The Beatles. Jesse’s grandmother, Micki Cox, was a jazz singer, and when Jesse was little, she dreamed of being a performer of some kind.
She didn’t have any guidance when it came to writing original songs and eventually convinced herself that she wasn’t born with the ability to write original music, as someone like Mozart was. Eventually, she was able to change that mindset and teach herself that everyone is capable of writing a song.
She participated in choir, musicals, and other shows throughout her schooling, singing with her friends in high school and discovering jazz on her own while playing with various bands. One of these bands got interest from Warner Brothers, recorded some records, and played some shows, but after a while, she decided to break up the band to pursue her career in jazz. After dropping out of Florida State University, she utilized her musical connections to create her first record under the name Aural Elixir.
She cites Frank Zappa as a major starting influence for her style, as he demonstrated that you didn’t necessarily have to write songs about love or other classic inspirations. She started leaning more toward playing piano after she and a drummer were the only people to arrive at a gig. She promised that she would be able to perform any gig even if she was the only one to arrive, and piano became yet another important part of her musical identity.
She loves the creative process and has always come back to music despite all of the other jobs she’s tried. Despite everything, the creative process always calls her back.
