Describing himself as “Equally adept on guitar and mandolin,” Greg Schochet has lived in Colorado for 34 years. Though he was born and raised on Long Island, New York, he came to Boulder to study English at the University of Colorado Boulder. In the end, though, he has made his living as a guitar and mandolin player and teacher for over 20 years.
His family always played music when he was younger, and some artists that stuck with him included The Beatles, Cat Stevens, Elton John, and James Taylor. During high school, he added bands such as AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and The Grateful Dead to his palette, the latter of which eventually led him to play the mandolin. He picked up the guitar during high school and hasn’t stopped playing since.
His first experience in a band was playing for Runaway Truck Ramp, a band that made two records and traveled around the country in an R.V. playing various shows. Eventually, he got into his first country band after getting back into the electric guitar: The All Night Honky-Tonk All-Stars. After playing at the Skylark Lounge in Denver, he met members of the Hi*Beams, who eventually called him to ask if he wanted to replace their guitar player. He’s been playing for the band for 16 years now, and he credits the band with a rewarding musical and professional experience.
Greg Schochet and Little America is his newest band and the first band under his own name. He describes the band as Western swing, where traditional country and traditional swing meet. He loves the unique sound of the band, and he hopes that audience members will appreciate the mixes of music that the band has to offer.
Greg Schochet and Little America will be playing at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 8 p.m.
