St. Mary’s Glacier, 9414 Fall River Road in Idaho Springs, is getting ready for GlacierFest 2021, an all-day-long music festival. Food, crafts, and art vendors will also be set up at the festival.
The event starts at 11 a.m. with a set by Amy Rose Scott, followed by the High Country Blues Rockers Band at 1 p.m., the Kind Mountain Band at 3 p.m., and In Flux at 5 p.m.
In 2018, organizers of the festival decided to expand the reach of a local music festival to include and welcome visitors outside of the Idaho Springs community. They ended up with an attendance of around 2,000 people by the end of the day.
In 2019, despite a lower attendance due to rain, the festival was still a success as the vendors made a profit and the musicians played in the downpour.
In 2020, the festival was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions. Co-organizer Ms. Carolyn Hohne is excited because, as an outdoor festival, people can space out however they want and continue to social distance. She recommends wearing a mask if you are unvaccinated or uncomfortable maskless. Since about 70% of Clear Creek County residents are vaccinated, she feels it can be held safely. For more information about masking policies in Clear Creek County, go to https://www.clearcreekcounty.us/1210/ Public-Health-Orders-Guidance.
Along with music and vendors throughout the day, the festival will also host an ore cart race, where visitors compete to race silver and gold ore up a small hill. The race, which will start at 12:30 p.m., will give an award to the person who races all of the ore to the top of the hill in the fastest time. As well as to the person that dresses in the most outstanding costume.
Visitors also have the option to hike to the top of St. Mary’s Glacier, a mile and a half hike where people can touch ice in the middle of August.
Admission to the festival itself is completely free. The only required payment is a $5 fee for parking. Hohne says the organizers want to make the event affordable for families. She describes the event as a “mountain event,” a friendly and casual embracing of the beauty of the Colorado mountains.
GlacierFest 2021 will be hosted on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at St. Mary’s Glacier, 9414 Fall River Road, in Idaho Springs. For more information about the event, visit Facebook to find its event page or go to www.stmaryspoa.com/ glacierfest.
