Prior to the formation of the Foggy Tops Bluegrass Band, founding member, harmonica player, and vocalist Tim Triggs played a weekly Thursday night bluegrass open jam at West Flanders Brewing in Boulder. Concurrently, he was taking African drumming lessons with his wife. Their teacher was from Ghana, and he was holding a fundraiser to build a cultural center in his hometown. Triggs had been playing with some of the same guys at West Flanders, so he offered to play music with them for the fundraiser. After the group formed, they chose six to eight names and voted on the best one, and thus, in 2015, the Foggy Tops Bluegrass Band was born.
The band consists of Triggs, fiddle player and vocalist Laurie Rugenstein, banjo player and vocalist Elijah Donovan, mandolin and guitar player and vocalist Mike Hendricks, bass player Mary Joyce, and cello, saxophone, and bass player Richard Turco. The band typically takes turns leading each song during a set, so each member gets to show off their skillset depending on which song is being played. The band members often bring their own favorite songs to play for the set, allowing each of them to show off their skillset in the lead position.
Most of the songs that the band plays are covers, but they will occasionally throw in some originals that one of the band members has written. In general, they focus on bluegrass, Americana, folk, and jazz elements for their sound, and they pride themselves on not taking themselves too seriously and focusing on having fun with the music. On their website, they describe themselves as “spontaneous and informal, with bits of humor thrown in,” demonstrating that they are always excited to let loose and have a good time.
Joyce and Triggs love the energy that is prevalent in live performances, as it’s easy to tell when the group hits a groove as they interact with each other and with the crowd. It’s also easy to tell when the crowd is completely sucked into the performance as well, and most of the time, the crowd is so invested that even little kids will start dancing to the music and having a good time. Joyce and Triggs hope that audiences can walk away from the shows having had a good time and having fun along the way.
