While this can and probably has been said about many musicians, this statement can especially apply to new East Boulder local Daniel Wander: music is a part of him. He grew up in a conservative Christian household, where he would sing around the piano with his family every day. His introduction to music was singing praise songs and learning choral and classical music. In middle and high school, he participated in the gospel choir program. He would often make up his own harmonies, and the teachers would often try to convince him (and his parents) to sing the correct choral line.
As a teenager, he distanced himself from the religion of his home life and got into rock and roll and hip hop, not being allowed to have drums as a kid. He eventually started traveling the world as a street musician, where along the way he met other musicians in New Zealand and formed the band Mad Hallelujah. The band performed for five years before the pandemic essentially broke them apart, and Wander started pursuing his own solo career.
Wander primarily plays acoustic and electric guitar, although he does play other instruments on the side. He does “a lot of finger-picking and intricate guitar work” and loves singing about his own experiences. He cites musicians such as Jack Johnson, Jurassic 5, Andrew Bird, Iron and Wine, and Led Zeppelin as major influences during his teenage years. He also found inspiration in roots and reggae after his first trip to New Zealand at the age of 19.
Currently, Wander has other jobs on the side in order to support himself while being a musician, but he loves being able to have music as a companion and friend and as a constant form of expression. He loves that no matter what, he can always have music there, and he is thankful for the Colorado community for welcoming him with open arms.
Wander has just recorded his first studio album Grow at Violet Recording in Boulder, and if you want to see Daniel Wander live, you can catch him performing at the Gold Hill Inn, 401 Main Street in Gold Hill, on Saturday, May 28, 2022, at 5 p.m. to promote the album. Coppertail will open up the night, and Wander will be performing with his backing band: Melly Frances on harmonies, Forrest Kelly on drums, and Ari Melinger-Cohen on bass.
