It was her first semester in music school in Levelland, Texas, and it was his last semester. Bonnie and Taylor Sims were students in the bluegrass program. They started jamming together and going to late night picking parties. A month or two after that they would start dating. It was the end of the semester, Bonnie won an award for Best Female Bluegrass Vocalist and Taylor won an award for Best Male Bluegrass Vocalist.
The school had all award-winners perform a song together at an end- of-semester concert, and Bonnie cites this concert as the beginning of their official status as a musical duo. As Taylor says, they became “inseparable.”
While their duo is based in bluegrass roots, their influences are spread widely, from Americana to Western swing to country to musical theater. Specifically, Taylor cites his interest in musicians such as Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, and Bob Dylan. Bonnie cites her interest in musicians such as New Grass Revival, Janis Ian, and Patty Griffin, along with the art of musical theater.
Bonnie and Taylor call their “emotional and spiritual” interaction with an audience a “love loop,” where the energy and love that comes from the stage is sent out into the audience and multiplied, then sent back to the stage and multiplied even more, and the cycle continues.
Bonnie loves the fact that the audience feels like a group of friends even though she’s never met any of the audience members before, and Taylor loves chasing the feeling of connection with the audience. They both hope that audience members leave knowing that the world is not a dark place and that there are ways to keep spreading hope doing what you love.
You can catch Bonnie and Taylor Sims performing live at the United Center, 1440 Colorado Boulevard in Idaho Springs, on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 7 p.m. Go to unitedcenterinc.com today to purchase your $20 tickets for the show.
