Right before COVID-19 brought the world to a standstill, guitar player Charlie White met mandolin player JD Songs at a community pick event in Boulder. They started getting together to write original tunes, and they eventually brought their upright bass player Clay Bedell, a friend of Songs’s, on board. Bedell knew a flute player by the name of Josh Wexler, and when he joined the band, White says that he fit in like a puzzle piece. He also says that the band genuinely enjoyed each other’s company, which was an incredibly important aspect of making the music feel authentic.
While the band utilizes acoustic instruments and can play bluegrass music, they do not consider themselves a bluegrass group. Songs says that the band incorporates a lot of jazz and swing elements into their music as well. He cites an influence in the David Grisman Quintet, a band that uses mandolins and flutes to blend jazz and bluegrass together. The band agrees that they could probably fit the bluegrass form if need be, but they describe their eclectic style of music as acoustic exploration, grizzly grass, or gritty grass.
The band loves the community and the healing aspects of music and live performances, and they love being able to share their unique style with a crowd while also hopefully healing themselves and the audience in the process. They hope that the audience will walk away from each show thinking that they are an original band and that no band plays quite like them. They hope that audiences will walk away knowing the specific style of Bear Hat as a band and that they have a great time at the live shows as a result.
If you wanna see Bear Hat performing live, be sure to check them out at the Jamestown Mercantile, 108 Main Street in Jamestown, on Friday, January 13, 2022, at 7 p.m. Also be sure to check out their Instagram at bear_ hat, and keep an eye out for their debut album, which will hopefully release in 2023.
