Thom LaFond, guitarist and lead singer. Michelle Pietrafitta, drummer. Jason Bertone, upright bassist. Nick Carter, five-string violinist. This is the current line-up of the jazz-pop group Banshee Tree. Originally formed in 2014 as a swing duo, the band first came into its current form in 2017, when Pietrafitta became the final member to join the group.

Each of them has their own individual influences that they’ve brought to the unique sound of the group. Bertone grew up in the punk rock scene, Pietrafitta brought psychedelic rock influences into the group, and the band as a whole cites dance, electroswing, swing, and bluegrass music as additional influences.

All of the band members have loved music since they were kids. Bertone’s experience with the punk rock scene allowed him to feel rebellious as a kid. Pietrafitta initially sang before falling in love with the drums. Carter’s first musical memory is building a drum kit out of pie and coffee tins and playing along with his parent’s records.

Their unique influences have allowed them to experiment with different styles of music and formulate the sound they have today. Earlier this year, they released a self-titled studio album that they produced, along with a music video for the single “Spare Me” that they also made themselves.

As a group, their camaraderie is evident. They love being able to travel and perform the music they love, allowing those that come to their shows to let out their stress and focus solely on the art in the room.

Banshee Tree will be performing at The Caribou Room on October 30, 2021, starting at 7 p.m.
