If you’ve heard the name Andy Thorn before, you’ve likely heard it for one of two reasons. The first is that since 2010, he has been the banjo player for the legendary jam band Leftover Salmon. The second is that on November 1, 2021, he uploaded a video on YouTube captured by his wife, Cecelia, of himself playing an improvised banjo piece for a local fox, which has garnered almost 4 million views since its upload.
This video is one of many examples of others that involve Thorn playing clawhammer banjo, a more rhythmic style of banjo that involves no pick, in the middle of nature. For whatever reason, though, this video is the one that has resonated with people the most, resulting in appearances on national television shows such as The Kelly Clarkson Show. As well as, discussions on radio shows such as NPR’s Political Gabfest, and even a shoutout from New York Times writer Ferris Jabr, who called it “a moment plucked from Aesop.”
Thanks to the wide reach of the video, Thorn decided to record the piece he played for the fox and (perhaps inspired by Jabr’s Twitter shoutout) called it “Aesop’s Mountain.” The piece, along with 14 other similar pieces of instrumental music, is now available for purchase and streaming in the brand new album Songs of the Sunrise Fox.
In regards to being able to perform live, Thorn loves the experience of being able to perform and see other people clearly enjoying their music. He says that especially after the pandemic, it’s great seeing people in such high spirits and back in festivals again. He hopes that through his performances and especially through his new album, people who initially believed they didn’t enjoy banjo music can find a way to enjoy this more laid back style. He also hopes that people who come to see a Leftover Salmon show find themselves in a better place than they were when they arrived.
You can stream and purchase Andy Thorn’s new album, Songs of the Sunrise Fox, wherever you listen to music.
