Andrew Cooney has been fascinated with music from an early age. His grandmother was a jazz piano player and a piano teacher, and from four to five years old, he would sit on her lap and learn the basics of the piano. He continued with piano lessons as he grew up, and he picked up multiple other instruments along the way, including the saxophone, the guitar, and what he considers his main instrument currently, the bass.
He considers the music he plays as “all over the place,” as he has focused on various styles of music at different points in his life and embraced them as part of his repertoire. However, a few influences have stuck out to him, particularly saxophone players Paul Desmond and Dave Brubeck. He also considers George Harrison and Dave Matthews inspirations, with the latter particularly having an influence on his songwriting style and guitar playing.
At five and six years old, Cooney started performing piano recitals at his school, and he also performed in his school band. However, it wasn’t until high school and into college that he started playing solo singer-songwriter gigs and bass gigs at bars and other venues. He likes that performing live gives him the opportunity to come out of his shell, since he considers himself a slightly more reserved person. Live shows allow him to show his work and be vulnerable with the people in the audience.
He hopes that people will be able to take away how much he truly cares about the music he’s performing. He hopes that other people can connect with his songs in some way, whether it’s on a personal level or whether it just gets stuck in someone’s head while they’re doing the dishes.
