Jon Ridnell has been playing music professionally for over 35 years. He first picked up the guitar at the age of 12 and has been fronting bands since the age of 15 in his hometown of Bronxville, New York. Shortly after his band Black Dog (which also happens to be his nickname) arrived in Nederland as part of a tour in the 90s, he moved into the area and became a staple of the town’s music scene.
Ridnell is part of various groups, including Black Dog, The Ned Trio, and New Family Dog Duo with his son, Miles. His heroes consist mostly of jazz musicians, including Wes Montgomery and Miles Davis. He also cites Tony Rice, The Allman Brothers, Little Feat, and Jimi Hendrix as influences. While primarily rooted in blues and rock, Ridnell is willing to play anything that interests him. According to him, the only things he can’t play are heavy metal and classical.
The Ned Trio is a Brazilian jazz group, New Family Dog (while primarily an electric band) plays everything from Americana to blues to country to weird avant-garde jazz, according to Ridnell. PowerLung Rangers, another band that Ridnell helped found, is influenced by hiphop, funk, and jazz. Having played over 7,000 shows since his music career started while also teaching on the side, Ridnell isn’t going to stop playing music anytime soon.
You can see Ridnell’s group Black Dog perform live every Sunday at 4 p.m. at Knotted Root Brewing, located at 250 N. Caribou Street in Nederland. Black Dog will be doing a solo winter tour starting January 31, the New Family Dog album Halo will be released on March 24, and the album release shows start on March 31.
