The Nederland Downtown Development Authority (NDDA) is commissioning an artist or artist team to design and create a mural in the heart of downtown. Submit your application materials to the open Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to be considered for the project.

RFQ Deadline: July 15, 2021 Total Project Budget: $2,500

Eligibility.

• Applicants are not required to have previous mural experience but must be active, professional artists.

• Artists living in Colorado’s Peak-to- Peak region may apply.

Project Description. As an inaugural project of the NDDA Public Arts Plan, we are working to commission an artist to create a new mural in downtown Nederland. The selected artist will design a mural that connects to the rich history and unique culture of Nederland and the surrounding Peak to Peak region. Our community has identified the following themes for the mural: nature/wildlife and/or cultural history of the town.

Mural Location. The mural location is on the east facing wall of the Business Connection building at the main intersection in downtown Nederland (74 CO-72). This location is highly visible from the roadway and accessible to pedestrian traffic.

• Site Details Surface: sanded plywood (mounted over the exterior brick wall)

• Scale: 8’ x 16’

• Duration: 3-5yrs + opportunity to sell artwork upon de-install

Completion deadline: September 30, 2021

Background. In accordance with the Public Arts Master Plan, the NDDA is working to build on Nederland’s identity as a thriving arts and cultural community situated in the rugged Rocky Mountains. The goal of this inaugural project is to leverage public art projects to actively engage and integrate the voices of a community into the projects. In 2020, the NDDA collected community feedback for future arts projects.

Nearly ninety percent of community engagement participants identified interest in commissioning murals in Nederland. Participants and the NDDA expressed a desire to have a prominent mural that connects to the culture and history of Nederland. Participants responded to the question, “What makes Nederland Unique?” with the following responses:

Environment Resilient culture, Progressive Tourists Festivals, Proximity to nature, Nonconformity, Wilderness, Independent, Hippies, Recreation, Local businesses, Wind, Music history, Indigenous history, Extraction/mining Diversity

Selection Process. All eligible RFQ submissions will be reviewed by the NDDA Public Art Committee. A finalist will be selected and notified by August 1, 2021. The selected artist must enter into a contractual agreement approved by the City of Nederland. Once confirmed, the artist will be paid $300 to prepare preliminary design materials: color drawings of the proposed mural, a detailed budget, and timeline. The preliminary design must incorporate the identified theme/s.

The artist will have approximately three weeks to complete the preliminary design materials to share with the committee. After one round of committee feedback and edits, the committee will for final approval of the design. Mural painting may begin as early as August 31, 2021, and must be complete by September 30, 2021.

August 27: Final design due September 30: Mural completion

Budget.

Design Fee $300. Includes one preliminary design, round of edits, and final design.

Artist Stipend $1,700. Includes Travel, labor, etc.

Materials/Tools $500. Must include a clear coat protectant to preserve the mural for 3-5 yrs.

Total $2,500

The selected artist/s are responsible for completing the artwork, which includes acquiring materials, supplies, equipment, etc. necessary for the project.

• Letter of Interest (up to one page)

• File must be submitted as a PDF - no longer than 1pg

• Outline why you want to develop a proposal for this mural

• Explain how you might create a design based on the identified theme (nature / wildlife and/or cultural history of Nederland) and how your work samples connect to this content

• Highlight your professional achievements and relevant past experiences

• Include your full name, current mailing address, phone number, and email address

• Up to 10 Work Samples

• Images must be saved in standard JPEG format

• Recommended dimensions are maximum of 1920 x 1920 pixels

• Maximum file size for each image is 2 MB

• Work Sample Description List

• File must be submitted as a PDF - no longer than 1pg

• Include the following information for each submitted image: Title, Medium, Year, Dimensions, and if necessary a 1-2 sentence description of the project.
