The Nederland High School Mountain Bike team had a great weekend in Leadville with a record number of 10 kids riding, including racer Ty Williams who ended up passing 28 other sophomore boys in his very first race.

The team has been focusing on both physical skills and mental fitness during their season this year. They have been running through skill-specific drills on their bikes and also working on mindfulness exercises through a program for young athletes from Nederland-based Reboot Mindfulness.

Their hard work paid off in Leadville, with Halle Peiffer grabbing sixth place in sophomore girls, Amika Begin taking sixth and Madeline Perry getting 12th in freshman girls. Sam Harkness moved up six places from his call up position in sophomore boys and Gary Koziel moved up eleven places. Freshman Finn Fitzer had to battle his way back after he crashed during the first lap but still finished the race, relying on the mental fitness they’ve been practicing.

In the varsity races, both juniors racing this year had a great day with Laila Waldron snagging fourth place and landing herself on the podium and Grayson Shurr racing hard to pass eight other varsity riders during his three laps.

The Leadville course is famous for its high elevation and technical routes, so the Nederland team was wellprepared with their practices being held mostly at the West Magnolia trails. If you know, you know.

The last regular season race is in two weeks in Eagle, Colorado, with many of the kids hoping to get to State in Glenwood Springs later in October. Good luck racers!
