The Mountin’ Mountain has been happening for 24 years strong! A few local mountain women decided to come up with a mountain version of the Bolder Boulder to escape the crowds and still enjoy a social outdoor recreational event.

Now there are quite a few regulars from Ward, Gold Hill, Rowena, and beyond who have participated for many years.

The Mountin’ Mountain begins at the Peak to Peak highway and Gold Hill Road (Highway 72 and County Road 52). Runners, walkers, bicyclists and dogs of all ages go east on Gold Hill Road to Gold Hill. It is longer than a 10K by approximately 500 meters.

Depending on weather, this unofficial event has been seeing 20-60 mountain people attend.

The dirt road offers beautiful views in every direction, occasional wildlife sightings and over the whole route you can usually catch all of Colorado’s weather- Snow, cold, rain, wind, sunshine.

At the midpoint there is usually a SAG wagon potluck waiting with muffins, sweets, fruit, mimosas and other delicious homemade treats including homemade sherbet.

The Gold Hill Inn always has a big Memorial Day Shindig so, by the time you reach it, the town is getting pretty busy, music is playing in the beer garden and it is a fun way to end a good walk.

Next year will be the 25th anniversary of the Mountin’ Mountain. What started with 2 moms and various friends, dogs, and kids wanting to enjoy a good walk on Memorial Day has blossomed into 25 years of locals enjoying the morning together.
