Mountain Forum for Peace sale a success Volunteers make the MFP yard sale a success each year, along with the donations and people who come and buy the items for sale. Pictured here are some of this year’s volunteer crew. PHOTO BY BARBARA HARDT[/caption]Hundreds of people visited the Mountain Forum for Peace (MFP) yard sale between Friday, July 23, and Sunday, July 25, taking advantage of gently used items donated by community members to support the yearly fundraiser. On Friday and Saturday, deals were made on everything from clothing to cameras, furniture to musical instruments, kitchenware, paintings and books, and more. During the last hour of the sale, on Sunday afternoon, everything was free for the taking.
About 25 volunteers helped make this year’s annual yard sale a smashing success. Between six and eight of them put in over thirty hours each over the week, sorting, organizing, preparing and setting up the Nederland Community Center for the weekend! Event coordinator Jessica Ansari said, “We had more donations than ever, even after being forced to shut down the drop off a day early.”
At the end of the event Arc Thrift Store has previously sent up a truck for the leftovers. This year Arc could not take anything, so organizers rented a U-Haul and drove donations to Goodwill stores down the mountain. Further leftovers were brought back up to Nederland to dispose of items like couches and bed frames that donation centers would not accept. Changes at donation centers down below will affect what types of goods donations Mountain Forum can accept in the future.
This year the event yielded over $10,000 which will be donated back to the community and around the country and world for peace related causes. Over the last year, MFP has focused on emergency grants, donating funds to the Gilpin and Nederland food banks, senior groups, the mountain branch of the Emergency Family Assistance Association, Canyon Cares, the Mountain Mask Project, a pandemic relief project through the Holistic Homestead and more.
