Susan Kelly, Nederland. Barker Reservoir is a stunning backdrop for the town of Nederland. While its purpose is to provide water for a hydroelectric power plant, it provides year round recreation and photo opportunities for Nederland’s citizens and visitors.
The shoreline trail which winds around the lake provides spectacular views of the reservoir, the town, and surrounding Rocky Mountains. Most of the recreation, however, is shoreline fishing for those with a valid fishing license. Sounds like a perfect place for a Memorial Day weekend to remember our fallen soldiers.
What was not perfect was the weather. Cool weather and rain not only kept visitors away, but also the threat of Covid-19. Only hardy folks with warm clothing and rain gear set up their fishing gear or hiked the trail making social distancing a natural practice.
