COAL CREEK CANYON - A delicious stew, smiling faces, vibrant costumes, and a pumpkin-launching trebuchet greeted the crowd at Jefferson Academy Coal Creek Canyon (JA-CCCK-8) on Wednesday, October 22, as the school hosted their first-ever Medieval Games.
All grades were invited to attend the event, and families were invited as well. However, the 4th and 5th grade classes were the ones participating, and one 5th grader even mentioned that the event “helped [his] classes to work on their teamwork, communication, and leadership.”
Many parents rose to the occasion, setting up tents, building the trebuchet, making popcorn for a snack, and finalizing their “medieval” accents to give their kids the best experience possible.
Students and staff started working on the program in September. Preparation consisted of reading educational books, writing and learning vocabulary words, and then reading tales of Robin Hood and King Arthur. Students made shields out of cardboard, decorated the classroom, customized their own goblets, and learned how a trebuchet works.
Four groups of kids rotated through seven stations: archery, balancing on curbs and working on teamwork, helping teammates get over the castle wall, jousting, a group balance board, a dubbing ceremony, and the fan-favorite pumpkin trebuchet.
