March 2022: As one of the two wettest months we count on March to deliver substantial moisture to prepare for the spring. This March did not disappoint with over 2 inches of liquid from nearly 29 inches of snow. We had some minor events from the 5th to the 10th, 20th to the 23rd, and 29th to the 30th. The big event was on the 17th-18th where we got a whopping 20 inches of snow. Early in the month we had some very cold mornings but things really warmed up with highs in the 60s late in the month.
Temperature: Conditions were generally warmer than normal but there were a few days in the first 10 days where we went below zero on a few mornings. The average high was 47F and the average low was 22F. Compared to normal these temperatures combined to be 7 degrees above the long-term average. The highest high was 62F on the 27th; The lowest low was -9F on 10th; the lowest high was 15F on the 6th. Precipitation: The general northwest flow brought in fast moving systems that didn’t produce big snows. This changed on the 17th when a more classic Pacific storm brought in deep upslope and 20 inches of snow around the area. Total was 28.7 inches which was right near normal. Liquid on the other hand was well above normal with 2.31 inches, a result of the warmer than normal temperatures.
Winds: Much less windy than normal with only 6 windy days. Peak wind was 55mph on the 12th.
Other Features: Northwest flow was persistent except for arrival of a strong Pacific wave. The snow pack dropped significantly in the warm last week of the month. My peak snow pack was 22 inches on the 18th falling to 2 inches by the end of the month.
Outlook for April : April days have highs of 49F with lows of 25F. There is 30 inches of snow in a typical April. There are only 6 windy days. Long range models are showing snow events on the 6-7th and 12-13th. Later in the month it looks like slightly cooler with about normal precipitation.
