John Scarffe, Nederland. Since the Nederland Sort Yard remains closed due to Covid-19 and an open date has not been announced, the Nederland Fire Department asks that residents considering fire mitigation projects check in with the Fire Department before beginning. Nederland Fire Department Captain Eric Abramson said it is easier to wait for the sort yard to open before beginning a major project.
If residents need to work on fire mitigation, the Fire Department recommends making small piles instead of one giant pile, and the piles should be 30 feet away from each other and any structures. “Use smaller piles that are spread out more,” Abramson said.
This is also a great time for a Zone 1 tune up within 30 feet of houses, Abramson said.
Rake up items like pine needles that are flammable, and get any firewood away from the house.
To prepare for possible fires, residents should get their go bags ready, know what items they are going to take and plan their escape routes.
“We are doing the same thing at the Fire Department,” Abramson said.
Regarding elections for the Nederland Fire Department Board of Directors, four candidates are running for three seats open after Treasurer Nicholas Brodsky and Board member Joe Evans will not run again, and the seat for Beth Davis, who is running again.
In addition to Davis, candidates are Todd Wieseler, Patrick Richardson and Iain Irwin-Powell. Ballots were to be mailed or dropped off at the Fire Department Polling place on May 5.
The May 6 Board of Directors Meeting was moved to May 13 at 7 p.m. to accommodate the election process. Preliminary results of the May 5 election will be posted that night; however, the election cycle allows for pending votes to be received as late as May 13 at 5 p.m.
