Jamie Lammers, Nederland. Madi Brewer, incoming senior at Nederland Middle Senior High School, has something to be proud of at graduation next year. On May 3, 2021, the Rocky Mountain Lady RoughRiders hockey team won their first ever USA Hockey National Championship, winning the 1A title of the Girls Tier II 16U National Championships.
The team prepared for months to get to this point before finally defeating the Philadelphia Little Flyers. They won the league playoffs, received second place in the district playoffs, and trained for two months for the final championships. Head Coach Chris Lockrem even took them to Chicago to attend a tournament weekend to prepare. The national championship was originally supposed to take place in Irvine, California, but was ultimately moved to the Denver metro area, allowing the RoughRiders to prioritize practicing over finding accommodations and a place to stay.
Unfortunately, two team members were unable to play in the final game, with one suffering severe nerve damage to her leg during the Arizona district games and the other breaking her collarbone just before the final match. However, that didn’t stop them from cheering their team on as they watched the exciting final game unfold, with the RoughRiders winning their first championship after four years of qualifying.
In an interview posted on the official website of the National Championships, team captain Emma Compton called it “a crazy, fun game” and joked that after snagging their first win, teams from across the country are going to have to keep their eye on the Lady RoughRiders.
Team Members: Emma Compton, Madi Brewer, Violet Arnold, Klara Bosshard, Joanna Buch, Kaia Carlson, Rowan Harral, Lexi Jackson, Renee Limpus, Kibben Mathewson, Thalia Maurer-Feid, Michaela Miller, Gemma Mueller, Lexi Mueller, Jordan Sewczak, Keilana Schmidt, Abigail Schum, Halee Smith, and Zoe Watson.
Special thanks to Madi Brewer for providing pictures, teammate names, and championship information.
