Clinton Wenholz, Gilpin County. Mike Wenholz 8th grader from Gilpin County Middle School, Joey Ariola 6th grader and Caleb Oliver 6th grader both from Nederland Middle School wrestled Saturday, March 25, at the annual Colorado Middle School Regional Tournament, representing their individual schools. All three young men have been competing for the last few years together and have recently completed their 2015-2016 season on the Gilpin County Youth Wrestling Program where they wrestled together as teammates.
The Colorado Middle School State Regionals and State Championship have not only become a well-attended favorite in Colorado; they have also become an extremely important part of Colorado wrestling. The top 8 wrestlers in each weight class qualify for State from their region. There are 6 regions around the state.
With many high school wrestling teams lacking in numbers, the middle school regionals and state tournament have helped influence wrestlers who may not have had future plans to wrestle in high school. After they experienced the tournaments that determine a true middle school state champion, they have changed their future course and turned to wrestling as a sport they look forward to continuing in high school.
Adam Gutierrez, President of RMN Events states, “It is our goal to keep wrestling strong in the state of Colorado and the middle school regionals and state tournaments do just that, you will see the same top wrestlers placing in the high school state finals as you see in the middle school state finals.”
On Saturday March 26th 2016 Joey wrestled his way to 7th place at 80lbs and qualified for State from region 1. Caleb wrestled his way to 8th place at 95lbs and qualified for State from region 1 as well. Mike wrestled his way to 1st Place and #1 qualifier for State as the region 5 champion at 100lbs.
Please come out to support Mike, Joey and Caleb as they will wrestle for a chance at at a state title representing their school and community on Friday April 1st 2016 at the National Western Complex, 4655 Humboldt Street, Denver, CO. Wrestling begins at 5:15pm.
