Local agencies assist in rescue on Rollins Pass

Sara Sandstrom-Kobi, Rollinsville. On July 18, 2020, right around 2 p.m. the Boulder County Communications Center was notified that a hiker had fallen on Rollins Pass. A 57 year old female from Broomfield had fallen down a scree slope near the Needles Eye Tunnel. She was hiking alone. The fall was approximately 300 feet down the slope and the hiker sustained serious injuries.

Another hiker, who was a nurse, provided first aid until the rescuers arrived on the scene. Search and rescue teams were sent in from the ground and the air. Timberline Fire and Gilpin Ambulance arrived, and a Flight for Life Colorado helicopter landed on Rollins Pass Road to take the patient to a Denver area hospital.

The rescue took place in a difficult place to rig an anchor. Fortunately, the weather was good enough to land a helicopter.

Situations like this take our first responders several hours to complete and many people are involved. Agencies assisting with this rescue were: Gilpin Ambulance, Timberline Fire Department, Grand County Search and Rescue, Flight for Life Colorado, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, and Boulder County Emergency Services.

The associated Boulder County Sheriff’s Office case number is 20-3175.
