Nederland Lions Club hosted the annual Peace Poster Contest at Nederland Middle Senior High School on Thursday evening, November 2. Each year Lions Clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace.
The theme of the 2023-24 Peace Poster Contest is “Dare to Dream,” and 28 posters were submitted from Nederland students ages 11, 12, and 13. Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit, and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district, and international.
During the awards reception, Lion Ann Marie Morgan welcomed students and parents while Lions provided refreshments. She shared, “Nederland Lions Club started sponsoring the Peace Poster Contest in collaboration with the school 19 years ago for a couple of reasons: to give recognition to the young artists, and to encourage our youth to express their thoughts on peace. And we have not been disappointed by the artistic talent over the years nor by the depth of thought behind the posters.”
Nederland art teacher Theresa Redmon introduced the student artists as they came forward and talked about their thinking behind the posters they created.
The winners of this year’s first, second, and third place posters were announced and cash prizes were awarded to Shayna Siegal Gane, Max Wrobel, and Izzy Moore. Shayna’s first place poster will now advance to the District competition.
Nederland Lions Club was pleased to host this year’s Peace Poster Contest Reception! We’d like to congratulate and thank all participants and their parents, as well as our community judges Elizabeth Azcarate, Sue Churches, and Brent Warren. A special thanks to Nederland art teacher Theresa Redmon for working with the students and encouraging them to showcase their artistic talents through the Peace Poster Contest.
