Omayra Acevedo, Nederland. Town is defined as an urban area that has a name, designated boundaries, a local government, is generally larger than a village, but smaller than a city. Most of us have either been to a town, live in one or have visited one in the past. I had the honor of joining the town of Nederland and its community in kicking off the 2019 holiday season.
The festivities began around 5 p.m. on December 6, 2019, with some hot cocoa and light snacks – I had carbs, but shh, don’t tell anyone. The local pic band showed up to warm our hearts with some holiday tunes. I met Santa, Mrs. Claus, Emmett – the candy cane artist, Nicki from public works, Karen, Melinda and Hope from town hall. All of these wonderful, hardworking individuals took part, along with Nicole Cavalino, Director of Nederland Area Seniors, in coordinating the kickoff to the holidays. Let’s also not forget the charming 10-year-old gentleman named Sam, who had the privilege of flipping the switch.
Just before the lighting, Mayor Kristopher Larsen, shared a few warming words, got the crowd in high spirits and ready for singing. To my surprise, yaks from the Yak Pack Outfitters showed up ready to guide the group in a caroling parade through town. I’ll admit that it only took one glance at their faces and I was in love. Animals are so amazing! I heard them referred to as the “Nederland Reindeer.” I love it!
We headed down First Street, stopping randomly at some of the local businesses to share a song, smiles and laughter. I will say that everyone embraced us and some even braved the cold and stepped outside to join in and applaud us. Though, the yaks were the best behaved of anyone there. Kidding! Every single person did an amazing job participating and having a great time! Including yours truly.
It felt so awesome to be part of something so cheerful, positive and relaxing. One of my many favorite things about the event was all the laughter, stories of past holiday celebrations and the comradery of everyone that showed up to support the town.
Community is defined as a group of people living in the same place or a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing a common lifestyle. This past Friday, on December 6, the town of Nederland came together as a community to light up the streets with cheer. I am proud to say that I was part of that. Wouldn’t it be great if communities all over the world, of every town would come together every day to do something so beautiful?
