Coming off a 44-26 win against Estes Park, the Gilpin County Varsity Girls’ Basketball Team looked to stay undefeated Thursday, December 2, against South Park. In their second home game of the year, from the onset the Eagles applied tenacious defense which caught the untested Burros by surprise. South Park did not have an answer to the relentless pressure and found themselves trailing the Eagles 30-7 at halftime. Even with a commanding lead, 20-year girls’ basketball coach Jeff Schuessler was not comfortable with three players in foul trouble.

Because of fouls, point guard Faith Ramsey sat almost the entire third quarter. Without her leadership and scrappy defensive play, during her absence the girls were still able to outscore the Burros nine to nothing bringing the score to 39-7 at the end of the third. South Park would not score a field goal the last three quarters of the contest.

Player of the Game Faith Ramsey along with Abby Smith, and Sterling O’Sullivan set the tone on defense. Also strong on defense were Kailee Starkey who added eight points and junior Skyley Ramsey who poured in 19 points to lead all scorers.

Final score: Eagles 42, Burros 9.

Notes from Coach Schuessler:

“We are still a young team who are learning a new system of relentlessly attacking on offense and on defense. This is a great group of girls who really enjoy each other’s company and they want to work hard for each other and that’s a great formula. Anytime your best players are working that hard and setting the standard for what it means to be part of the program, and the younger players are buying into that philosophy, it’s going to be an enjoyable experience regardless of wins and losses. So, we are just really trying to work on getting one percent better every day and hoping to be the best team we can be by the time playoffs roll around in February.”
