June 2022: Monsoon here early but not a friend

June 2022: Despite a mid-June arrival and an organized and persistent moist flow, the monsoon did not deliver much precipitation in our area. Total for the month was only 0.65 inches, about 64% below normal. Thunderstorms occurred on a number of days but only provided hit or miss showers. Fortunately, the associated lightning did not trigger any fires. The generally moist atmosphere was also helpful in mitigating the fire threat. Temperatures for the month were slightly above normal but we escaped the really hot days that often occur in late June.

Temperature: A bit above normal owing to the warmer than average lows. The highs were right at normal. The average high was 70F with a low of 46F. The warmest high was 83F on the 11th. The coolest high was 44F on the first (A day we had measurable snow). Lowest low was 32F on the 2nd.

Precipitation: The month began with a rare June snow of 1.3 inches. The following week had thunderstorms nearly every day, but little precipitation. The monsoon established itself on the 13th with showers nearly every day (with a couple of breaks), until the end of the month. The rainiest days were just over a tenth of an inch. The 17th had a brief quarter-inch hail storm. All these events brought only 0.65 inches of liquid, well below the normal of 1.78 inches.

Winds: Not a windy month with only three days at 40+ mph.

Other Features: Much frustration in seeing thunderstorms forming to our south and east and barely missing Nederland.

Outlook for July: July is our warmest month with average high/low of 77F and 47F respectively. July can be very wet with normal precipitation of 2.68 inches. This can vary greatly with amounts sometimes falling to about an inch. The long range model guidance keeps the monsoon pattern active through the first week with conditions turning drier. The monsoon is likely to return about mid month ending with warmer and drier conditions.
