The Elks Lodge in Central City played host to a Meet and Greet event on March 3, 2024, aimed at promoting Jessica Kays for the District 1 County Commissioner seat. Amid discussions on local issues, attendees had the opportunity to engage with Kays and the Republican Committee.
A congenial atmosphere prevailed as refreshments were served, and participants discussed various matters concerning Gilpin County. Notable among the topics was the Republican Committee’s upcoming adoption of a highway initiative slated for April 20.
The endeavor will involve litter cleanup along Highway 119, stretching from just north of Black Hawk to the vicinity of Gilpin Public School, followed by a gathering at the Mountain Poppy Wine Bar in Central City.
Kays, 44, a longtime resident deeply rooted in the community, presents herself as notable for her dedication and involvement. Having commenced her education at Gilpin High School as a freshman, she has remained a steadfast presence in the county ever since. With three children aged 19, 22, and 26, Kays brings a perspective shaped by her experiences as a parent and a professional.
Kays’ career trajectory, marked by service to the county, includes a stint as County Clerk from 2001 to 2011. Subsequently, she transitioned into a partnership role within a small IT company specializing in services for government entities, including Gilpin County.
Undeterred by past setbacks, Kays submitted her bid for District 1 Commissioner following the passing of Web Sill. While not selected initially, she remains committed, and is now actively pursuing the position in the upcoming Primary election scheduled for June.
Acknowledging the concerns of those Gilpin residents regarding County spending, Kays articulates her vision for the region. She advocates for the continued operation of the Gilpin County Community Center, with County funding comparable to its historical support prior to 2021.
Additionally, she emphasizes the importance of addressing food insecurity, recognizing the challenges faced by residents due to the absence of nearby grocery stores and transportation options.
Marilyn Ashmore, a staunch supporter of Kays, seeks to bolster volunteerism within the community, particularly for essential services like the food pantry and the Community Center. Kays herself emphasizes the need for collaborative partnerships and sustainable solutions, prioritizing the voices of residents in any decision-making processes.
With a focus on fostering transparent communication and community engagement, Kays emphasizes her commitment to representing all constituents, transcending political affiliations and geographic boundaries. She advocates for increased citizen participation through avenues such as Town Hall meetings, aiming to harness the collective wisdom and expertise of Gilpin County residents.
As Kays gears up for the upcoming Republican Caucus on March 7 and the County Assembly on March 21, her message to voters resonates with a promise of diligent representation and unwavering advocacy for their interests. “My passion and focus is to do the best I can for all residents of Gilpin County,” she asserts. “Regardless of party, I will stand for you, I will work for you.”
In the forthcoming election Jessica Kays appears as a candidate poised to champion the concerns of Gilpin County, offering a blend of experience, vision, and a genuine commitment to community welfare. As the campaign unfolds, Kays aspires to secure the trust and support of Gilpin County’s electorate.
