Dear Editor,
I watched the throngs of pro-Trump supporters at his Waco rally yesterday, all decked out in their MAGA hats and Trump 2024 t-shirts. I listened this morning as the results of the latest NPR Merris poll found that 80% or Republicans still like him. I do not understand. Trump is such a liar and criminal, yet the Republican base supports his grievance tour and believe that many of the investigations against him are “witch hunts.” If that is not worrisome enough, here is the last paragraph of Heather Cox Richardson’s “Letter to an American” for Monday, March 27.
“And the danger to democracy at home was crystal clear last night, as former president Trump held a rally in Waco, Texas, where in 1993 a 51-day government siege of the headquarters of a religious cult gave birth to the modern anti-government militia movement. Since then, Waco has been a touchstone for violent attacks on the government. There, last night, Trump stood on stage with his hand over his heart while loudspeakers played not the national anthem but a song recorded by January 6 insurrectionists. Footage from the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol played on a screen behind him.”
Biden beat him by 7 million votes in 2020. As these investigations proceed, I wonder how the Republicans will find a way to keep their base and yet move on from him. If they don’t the Democrats will probably win by more than 7 million.
