NEDERLAND – For the next few weeks, hockey games are being played on Saturdays at NedRINK in Nederland.
Peak to Peak Hockey’s year is in full swing as they skate and shoot their way into the last half of their season. The nonprofit organization Peak to Peak Endurance assumed operations from Nederland Youth Hockey Association this year and offers five different hockey programs: Coed Under 8, Coed Under 10, Coed Under 12/14, Girls Only Under 8/10, and Girls Only Under 12-16.
Executive Director Gavin Coombs said that other than enriching kids’ lives and making sporting activities available to all of them, their goal is for the local youth to have fun. It may sound simplistic, cliché, or even corny, but it’s true – the last words overheard recently spoken to a team by one of the hockey coaches as his squad headed out on the ice for the face-off were to “have fun.”
That was on January 11, when his Under 12/14 Westminster Highland Hills Jaguars faced Nederland’s Peak to Peak team. The Jaguars prevailed in a back-and-forth 9-8 shootout.
The second game pitted Peak to Peak against the Lafayette Locomotive in the Under 10 division. Everyone had such a good time that nobody was quite sure what the final score was.
