BLACK HAWK — Awesome. That's the only word I can think of that describes this past week.
We spent a lot of time cleaning at our Nederland office. I spent a lot of time organizing the remaining pieces of the historic archive at my house. And we started going through the archive to work on a new project.
Other than 2010 to 2014, we are getting ready to purge files. Sometime in October (as we start our 50th year in print), we will begin the process of selling off old copies of The Mountain-Ear. The price will be $5 per paper, plus shipping if you are out of the area. These fees will help us raise the funds needed to archive 2010 to 2014, which must be scanned page by page into a usable document.
Don’t worry, we’re keeping a few, safely stored in our storage space at The Vault. But the extras, we are ready to start offering to the public.
Did you have an article you wanted to track down from 1981? We’ve got that paper. And the one about the rodeo in 1987, in Nederland? Yup, we have that one too. And local schools, government, business features, and all of the other incredible news we’ve covered since 1977. We have that too. The history you can dig into, from hippies to hoedowns, bank robberies to bombing attempts—it’s all in here.
More than that story or that photo you’re looking for, these papers are the historical records of the municipalities around us.
Those sidewalks everyone complains about? All the history is in these papers. Gaming and how it came about? All in these papers.
Think about it: Almost five decades of history, in print, available to the public.
Okay, we’ve covered the past, let’s talk about this week a bit. Recently, we partnered with the Ned Jazz and Wine Festival to give away a handful of tickets to its 5th annual celebration, happening this coming Saturday right in Chipeta Park. Claire Bruno, Marisa Pasianot, and Kirsten Wilmeth walked away with free passes to the day long event!
There's plenty more events where this came from—we do frequent giveaways on both The Mountain-Ear and Caribou Current socials, namely Instagram, for gift cards to local businesses and ticketed happenings, so be sure to follow both to get in on the action.
Coming up August 27 to 29, The Mountain-Ear has a number of staff attending the Colorado Press Association Network Local News Solutions. This is a three-day conference focused on networking, roundtable discussions, workshops, and more. Each year we attend this conference to learn what’s new in the industry. We’ll share a roundup of the event in the September 3 edition of The Mountain-Ear.
Otherwise, hold on tight—we have lots of amazing news coming your way, this week and every week.
