Pete Morgan, Gilpin County. The Gilpin County High School Wrestling team had its first competition of the season last Saturday at Middle Park High School. Josh Trujillo (145) and Mike Wenholz (113) both battled their way to 4th place against seasoned 3A and 4A wrestlers. Mike Wenholz, as a freshman, ended up on top of his weight class only to be beat out by seniors who either qualified or placed at last year’s State Championships. When asked about how long the tournament lasted, Josh Trujillo stated "I don't know, we have never had anyone make it this far here". In the three years since High School Wrestling returned to Gilpin, this was the best outing yet at Middle Park.
Middle School Wrestling at Brighton
The Gilpin Middle School Wrestlers were at Brighton High School last Saturday for one of the Metro Leagues 12’s & 14’s only Tournament. Every Gilpin Wrestler attending fought hard and did well, according to coach Travis Murdoch. Kamron Brewer won 4 matches, against extremely tough competition, to end up in 2nd place. None of the Gilpin Middle School Wrestlers finished below 4th place. It should be noted that 10 and under 5th grader Roland Keller went up an age division and wrestled amazingly against middle school kids.
