The Gilpin County Eagles faced their peers at the Longs Peak/NCAC/Mile High League Track Meets in Longmont on May 3 & 4. They hadn’t seen as much action this year as they’d like since four of their scheduled track meets were canceled due to inclement weather. With merely four competitions under their belt, the Eagles were more than ready to compete against the other eight schools in their league. Teams had three entries in most events.
The Cope siblings both participated in the Shot put. Freshman Neko registered a toss of 30 ft., 5 in., in the Boys Shot put. His senior sister Lili broke her own school record earlier in the year at the Kiowa Klassic, heaving the shot 29 ft., 8 in. Approaching that mark at 28 ft., 7 in., she was third best in the girls’ field. Mason Sechler outdistanced the other Eagles with a gargantuan heft of 36 ft., 1 in., and fourth place in the boys’ competition.
Another top finisher for Gilpin was Faith Ramsey, taking third place in the Girls 200m Dash. Ramsey’s time of 29.64 broke her personal record.
In the Girls 800m Sprint Medley Relay, Gretchen Osteboe, Zoey Paul, Avery Ramsey, and Faith Ramsey laid down a time of 2:07.24 earning them a solid fourth-place finish. Avery Ramsey won her heat in the Girls 100m Dash in a time of 13.92, and ultimately fifth place. Ryan Marr was also a fifth-place finisher in the 100m Dash. His wind-aided time of 11.70 tied a Gilpin school record.
Ryan Marr, Andrew Davis, Connor Holloway, and Drew Starkey earned a respectable seventh place in the Boys 4x200m Relay. Vincent Schoell, Andrew Davis, Maximus Tanner, and Taurean Paxton achieved the same result in the Boys 4x800m Relay.
Coach Craig Ball was pleased with the results, calling his team’s effort, “The best showing we’ve had at this meet in the past three years.”
In their final competition of the season, the Eagles travel to Kremmling on Friday, May 10, to compete in the Joe Shields Invitational.
