Gilpin Track at Denver Christian Invitational

Nearing the end of their season, the Gilpin Eagles Track Team entered the Denver Christian Invitational in Lakewood on April 28 with an eye toward bettering previous performances. Most of the schools of the 14-team field had larger enrollments than their own. Circumstances prevented them from running three of their strongest events, yet they still made an impressive showing.

Freshman Lizzie Westbrook leapt an astounding three inches higher in the high jump than her personal best, registering a height of 4’7” and putting her within an inch of the school record. The fourth brother to attend Gilpin High School, senior Jimmy Immordino heaved the shotput 34’7.75,” earning him a third place finish. Like Westbrook, he also now stands second among Gilpin greats. As only a freshman, Faith Ramsey not only broke the school record, but ran the fastest 1A 1600m this year with a time of 5:55.65, which was good for fifth place.

After the meet Coach Craig Ball related that, “We are now getting ready for our biggest track meet of the year May 6-7 as we travel to Longmont for the Mile High League Meet with our team of twenty. The two-day event format allows for participation by athletes in multiple events on separate days to ensure adequate rest between races. We will be running four relay teams and look to place highly in those relays and the 400m, 800m, 1600m, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, shotput, and high jump. Our girls 4x800 relay team, which shattered the school record by 17 seconds earlier this year, is ranked first in our league, and they are expecting to run their best time of the season.”

Following the Mile High League Meet, the Eagles will be competing in the Colorado State Championships at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood May 19-21.
