BLACK HAWK – The holiday season got off to a delicious start at the annual Gilpin County Senior Holiday Luncheon on December 4, 2024.
This year, the celebration was extra special, as it moved from the Senior Center to the beautifully decorated banquet room at the Ameristar Casino in Black Hawk. The change added a festive flair, and it was clear everyone had a wonderful time.
Senior Services Coordinator Mary Ellen Makosky, who organized the event, couldn’t have been happier. “The turnout was incredible, and the food was just outstanding,” she said.
And what a meal it was! Guests enjoyed pineapple and cherry-topped ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, braised collard greens, salad, turkey gravy, and green bean casserole. The desserts were a definite highlight, featuring apple crumb pie and a chocolate pecan pie that many said was simply irresistible.
“It felt so gourmet,” said attendee Alisa Witt. “The attention to detail was remarkable, from the food to the decorations. I’m already looking forward to next year.”
The open seating arrangement added to the festive and welcoming vibe, encouraging casual conversations among the attendees. Friends caught up, newcomers shared stories, and laughter filled the room as plates were piled high with delicious food. The warmth of the gathering made it feel like a true holiday celebration.
The Ameristar catering team pulled out all the stops. The banquet room sparkled with holiday decorations, and the catering executives even dressed up to serve the food.
Head Chef Steve Peat said the team was proud of their work. “Our food and beverage and banquet teams are super efficient, professional, and hit it out of the park,” he said. With a laugh, he admitted, “I do have a pie problem – I was the one who insisted on three options!”
With full hearts and satisfied appetites, attendees left the Ameristar Casino already looking forward to next year’s gathering.
The luncheon is just one example of how the Gilpin County Senior Program brings the community together. The program offers classes, field trips, shopping outings, chore services, and lunches every Wednesday and Friday from 12 to 1 p.m.
