Tommie DiMauro has attended school in Gilpin County since Kindergarten. Some of Tommie’s earliest fondest memories include trying out Montessori halfway through the third grade and in the fourth grade. Another of Tommie’s cherished memories is going on the sixth grade Outdoor Education trip to Estes Park.
Tommie has participated in volleyball in ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades and in basketball and track in the ninth and tenth grades. Volleyball, which she is passionate about in and out of school, as well as friends, have been Tommie’s biggest inspiration for attending school.
While in school, she worked at the Eagles Nest Learning Center as an assistant teacher, where she feels she has created a second family. She also worked at the Gilpin County Community Center as a lifeguard.
What Tommie has loved most about high school is the freedom she felt growing up and looking at her teachers more as friends than enemies. Tommie’s favorite teachers are Mrs. Newberg during her junior year and Ms. Gilette during her senior year.
She shares, “Both of these teachers took the time to listen and observe how their students were feeling and always helped and supported me when I needed it whether it was their class work or not.” Tommie’s favorite class was criminal justice.
A student who has made life better for Tommie is Sarah Lovett. Tommie’s advice for kids going to Gilpin Schools is to “take one step at a time.”
After graduation, Tommie plans to take a gap year to continue working. After the gap year ends, and once she has decided what to major in, she will attend community college. She will miss not being able to see her friends and classmates as often.
Congratulations on reaching one of many life’s proud milestones!
