The Gilpin County School District hosted an open house at the school at 10595 Highway 119 for parents and prospective parents of students on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. The open house began at 5:30 p.m. and featured a new student orientation that evening to show visitors what the school is all about.
The Open House featured a variety of student activities, events, and performances.
The Open House and new student orientation provided an opportunity for parents and prospective parents to meet the teachers, tour the school, learn the curriculum, interact with students, explore daily schedules, and learn about the Montessori Choice.
In the lobby on the first floor, displays included a probability game that would be run throughout the open house. Student Kyla Nand she set up the program. It is a maze, and a person draws a card that will determine where they will exit the maze.
A table represented 4-H and the CSU extension office. Kathryn Harvey promoted the Eagle afternoon program for students. Gayle Rust and Michelle Hernandez promoted the Booster Club.
Also in the lobby, monitors displayed all of the teachers in the school, plus extracurricular activities. Displays stretched down the hallways in front of the classrooms showing photographs of the students and displays of their coursework. Another monitor described what a school day is like for administrators.
In the cafeteria, students played games including tossing a ping pong poll into a cup and rolling a die down a board. Student Autyauna Amaya displayed a screen print, which is part of the probability game.
Some students performed musical numbers they had rehearsed during the past semester.
Superintendent David MacKenzie said before the event, “From our preschool teaching and learning program curriculum to our concurrent high school and district-paid college tuition dual credit enrollment, GCSD provides well- rounded curricular and extracurricular programs to all students and prepares graduates for college and career.”
The school has a four-day school week and a 100 percent graduation rate. It offers college courses and a ski club. The preschool through Grade 12 offers a staff dedicated to students and provides an average student class size of 16.
