On Thursday, June 1, students from Gilpin County School were released for their long summer. They are not set to return until August 21.

With the last day of school being a half day, elementary students participated in field day during the morning hours. They did potato sack races, foot races, a mock javelin toss, and saw who could jump the farthest. The events were cut short by a sudden burst of rain and hail.

The high school and middle school, meanwhile, finished up their finals and any other last minute assignments and projects for their classes. At the end of the classes teachers ushered everyone out wishing good summers to their students. They are just as eager for their own summer to start.

The last day of school is always filled with tears, goodbyes, and plans to meet up over the summer. Luckily several camps have already been planned by the high school sports teams. The soccer team hosted a peewee camp after school on that last day and the volleyball team and basketball team plan to host camps later in the summer as well. The basketball and volleyball teams have also already started practices to keep the team fit over the summer and well prepared to play in the coming year.

Those who do not participate in sports have other things to look forward to over the summer like the Gilpin County Fair, the Father’s Day fishing derby and the Gilpin Rec Center always has new events coming up and many fun things to participate in.

Of course with summer comes the thoughts of its end and the start of a new school year. Many students prepare for their final year of high school, while others are eager to enter into their high school years. The fifth graders toured the high school and middle school in the last days in preparation for their own transition into the high school. They seem eager to begin their journey through middle school and beyond.
