While most students from Gilpin County relax and hang out with friends over summer, the Gilpin County High School Girls’ Volleyball team has been practicing. Twice a week they meet up at the school’s gym and practice for two hours. They’re working hard for the start of the school year and the volleyball season.
In June they had a three-day camp where a coach from Strasburg came up and taught the team important volleyball skills. They mainly have been practicing passing and serve receiving and other basic skills necessary to play. The camp also helped with bringing the team together.
Jiselle Oseboe, a member of the volleyball team, said that the camp was, “exhausting but it was definitely good to see my teammates putting in the work. It makes the season so much better and it creates a really good atmosphere for the team.”
In team sports the team working well together is vital to good games. Over the summer is the perfect time to change things around and see what works best for everyone and where everyone’s strengths lie. In a test of their newfound skills and work over the summer about twenty of the girls attended a two-day tournament in Strasburg.
The tournament was mostly for game time and to help the team get a better feel for the court and how real games work. The summer is the perfect time to work on team dynamics and positions for everyone. It allows the time for everyone to determine their own strength and find where everyone best fits in the team.
All students from Gilpin County School are allowed to go and work out. The weight room is always open and any student is allowed to go work out there, and occasionally Coach Ball holds workout classes. Though when these classes are held is totally random. Coach Ball decides when to hold the classes. The field and track are also available for running or walking.
