Anne Scarffe, Gilpin County. Gilpin County School Board met on April 6, 2021, at 7 p.m. Superintendent David MacKenzie congratulated staff, families and students for 96 days straight with in-person learning. He mentioned that the school year has only 30 more days, with graduation planned for May 15. He mentioned all the safety improvement projects are underway.

As of March 29, 2021, Gilpin County became green for Covid, with the schools at 82 percent, with two or more students returning to in-person learning each week. Dr. MacKenzie referred to the Governor’s Executive Order about continued mask usage until at least May. Gilpin County Commissioners agreed with masks being mandatory when a six foot distance for safety cannot be maintained.

Dr. MacKenzie discussed with the Board a recently passed bill in Colorado Legislature concerning waivers for testing for grades three through eight. Parents can either opt their child in (or out) of testing in English Language Arts for grades three, five, and seven, Math for four, six and seven, and science for eighth grade. PSAT and SAT testing is set for April 13.

The Board approved the late start on March 30, 2021, with Dr. MacKenzie stating two days are left for inclement weather coverage.

The 2021-2022 school year calendar has typographical errors found by Dr. MacKenzie and staff.

The Board planned a second reading of three new policies, two were approved about Public Participation Guidelines and Public Participation Form, but board members were concerned of wording of the policy AC-E-3: Guidelines regarding Support of Students who are Transgender and Gender Nonconforming. The policy is based on state recommendations, concerned with the rights and privacy for all students. This policy was tabled until the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned for the Board to start an executive session to discuss salary negotiations, collective bargaining, and personnel matters.

The next meeting is scheduled for April 20, 2021, at seven p.m., in the school auditorium, for in-person, or on Youtube.
