Gilpin Scholarship Meeting

Gilpin County High School seniors attended a meeting to learn about scholarship opportunities in the school auditorium on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 8:30 a.m. The school has 27 seniors this year.

School Counselor Kim Cobb led the meeting and introduced six speakers who presented scholarship opportunities.

Sharon Perea presented the Alan Green Memorial Foundation scholarship with a deadline for applications of March 31.Applications must include a personal letter, official transcript, and an acceptance letter for higher education.

In the early 1900s the Greens owned a great deal of property in Gilpin County. They had one son, a teacher, who died in a commercial airplane accident. In 1982 they started the memorial foundation in his name. The scholarships are available for high school students and college students, including those planning to attend trade schools.

They look at students’ goals and what they want to study. They have scholarships for $1,000 and $3,000 and one leadership scholarship for $60,000. Applicants for the last must explain what they have done as a leader.

Perea also introduced the Barbara Theilemann Family Teacher Scholarship, named for an active Gilpin County volunteer. They have one scholarship for $1,000 awarded to a student pursuing a career in education. The deadline is April 29.

Sarah Swanson presented the Gilpin County Education Foundation scholarships with a deadline of April 28. She said everyone who applies gets a scholarship.

The Foundation, started in 1994, raises funds for scholarships. The annual fundraising dinner will be on April 22 this year. They require a grade-point average and transcript.

Mary Lorenz presented the Peak to Peak Rotary scholarship for District 5450. They have one scholarship for $1,000; the deadline is April 22.

City of Black Hawk scholarships are open to students who receive their high school diploma from Gilpin County Schools. Started in 1994, applicants can receive $2,200 and have six years to use the funds. A 3.0 GPA is required. The deadline is March 15.

The Gilpin County Booster Club has three $500 scholarships for academics, arts, and athletics. Applicants must write an essay; the deadline is April 25.

The Barbara Lawlor Memorial Scholarship applications are due on April 15. The Barbara Lawlor Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2018.

The mission of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to individuals who are enrolled in courses in community college, a college, or university. Preference will be given to students who attended high school in Nederland or Gilpin County.

Eligible students will have participated in contributing stories or photo essays to The Mountain-Ear newspaper during their high school career. The organization pays scholarship funds directly to the recipient.

Scholarships are awarded annually. Scholarships will be in the amount of $250, $500, or $1,000. Applicants must be completing or have completed high school successfully and be accepted as a full-time student at a college or university for the upcoming academic semester.
