GILPIN COUNTY - It was six years ago that the Lyons Lions football program decided to change from an 11-man format to an 8-man format. Since that time, the Gilpin Eagles have never beaten them.
Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Gilpin County Stadium was an opportunity to rectify that. It was to be the seniors’ final game on their home field.
A 70-yard kickoff return followed by a touchdown pass by the Lions wasn’t exactly the start the Eagles were looking for. Gilpin soon answered with a 40-yard touchdown by Ryan Marr on a reverse play to tie the score.
With the clock winding down, an interception by Jack Fisher at the opponent’s 13-yard line set up an Eagles’ rushing touchdown and 2-point conversion to bring the tally to Gilpin 14, Lyons 6 at halftime.
Gilpin and Lyons would trade touchdowns in the third quarter, but the play that stood out most happened on the sidelines. Longtime member of the chain gang Ann Meyers, age 70, was wiped out by a player careening out of bounds during a tackle. She lay on her back motionless for 15 minutes while medical personnel attended to her. She was carried to the bench where ice was applied to her knee.
Meyers suffered two broken bones in her leg. She will need two surgeries to repair the damage, with the first of those taking place on Sunday, the day after the incident. She is in good spirits and was even seen smiling on the sidelines following the injury. We wish her a full and speedy recovery.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles relied on their rushing game to score two more touchdowns. Landon Church was a workhorse, with 34 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Fisher added two rushing touchdowns and Ryan Marr one. Final score: Gilpin 36, Lyons 14.
The Gilpin Eagles’ record now stands at 6 wins and 2 losses. With a victory against Justice next week in a game where the Eagles are favored, the team will be 7-2—tying their best mark during Head Coach Craig Ball’s 12-year tenure.
Undefeated Clear Creek has the 8-man Central League sewn up, but if everything goes Gilpin’s way, the second place Eagles have a shot at making the playoffs with an at-large bid.
