Gilpin gridders gear up for season

Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County.  At last week’s after-school practice on Thursday, Gilpin High School football coach Dave Ball watched his team stretch, run, bend, and throw. After last year’s winning season, the Eagles bring most of last year’s starters back onto the field, ready to go beyond where they left off in 2014.

Seniors Jonny Lovett, Chase Boulter, Jonathan Ramsey, Bjorn Tomlinson, and Sam Ghaffari return. Last year Gilpin ended the season 5-3, tied for second place until Elbert County earned the playoff slot.

Senior Chase Boulter will quarterback the team as he has for the past few years. He and his teammates have built a strong offensive unit and will be a force to contend with in 8-man football. In last year’s game against West Grand, Boulter passed for 207 yards, had 56 yards rushing, three touchdown passes, and one touchdown run to be named the Player of the Game.

Junior Matthew Immordino has been the running man, deft and fast, able to wiggle away from tacklers and head to the goal. He was brilliant as a freshman and now has two years of starting as a foundation to this season. He had 1,275 rushing yards for the year and was often named the offensive player of the game. He carried 40 times in the win against West Grand.

Senior Bjorn Tomlinson is a consistently strong tackler, the defensive player of the game four times, as well as a great receiver good for at least a touchdown in most games.

Jonny Lovett was named the Overall Player of the Game against Nederland last season, after hanging on to a 65-yard touchdown pass and also making one interception. He is a rock on both offense and defense and will be a huge asset on the team.

This year’s Homecoming Game will be played on October 16 under lights, against the Nederland Panthers, whom they beat last year. The Panthers have a larger team and more experienced team this year and the homecoming game could be a crowd-pleasing battle of the season.

The Eagles’ first game will be an away game this Friday, August 28, against Sanford. The first home game will be September 5, against Rocky Mountain Lutheran at 1 p.m.
