After a rocky start in Estes Park to begin the basketball season, the Gilpin Boys’ Varsity team rebounded with a 34-30 victory a day later against Denver Academy. Juniors Trey Lindberg and Ezra Williams led the team in scoring that held off a fourth quarter run by the Mustangs.
A day after that on Thursday, December 2, the Gilpin Eagles would have an opportunity to improve their record to above .500 in their third home appearance in three days.
The Eagles are led by first-year head coach Lisa Boulter who brings her four years as a Gilpin Eagles player and a year of college experience to the team. Boulter was the assistant coach for the boys’ varsity team the previous six years. Her close confidant and husband Steve now occupies her old position at her side.
The South Park Burros came in needing a win and proved a worthy opponent, evenly matched against the Eagles. Gilpin would have to earn a victory through hard work and perseverance. In a defensive struggle where neither team gave much, after three quarters of play, the score was Eagles 19, Burros 18. Outscoring South Park 9-6 in the final period, the Eagles cruised to a 28-24 win.
Forward Jimmy Immordino registered his best game to date going 3 for 4 shooting and nine points. Point guard Trey Lindberg also added nine points. Sophomore Lane Willis was a force, hauling down five defensive rebounds and blocking a shot. Trey Lindberg, Jimmy Immordino, and Alex Rodriguez- Jimenez contributed four rebounds apiece. Hounding the opposition, Rodriguez-Jiminez’s quick hands resulted in six steals. Ezra Williams had three steals and Trey Lindberg two.
Coach Lisa Boulter said that she is happy with the start of the season and praised the great defensive effort by the starters and the players coming off the bench. “We just need to work on our shot selection, but have total confidence that will fall into place before break and before league play starts.”
